Signs you may have Wet Basement Walls | Washington DC

For many people, the first time they notice wet basement walls comes whenever their structure is flooded. There are usually some telltale signs that are present beforehand, so if you are observant enough, you can save yourself a great deal of heartache. Here are some things to look for in your own basement that will let you know there could be an underlying problem.

  • Mold is actually one of the more common signs, and can appear on walls, floors or ceilings. If you notice mold, don’t ignore it, as it is a sign something else is going on that needs to be addressed.
  • Dampness or a musty odor may also be present along with mold. Even if you do not see mold, but your basement has a lingering musty odor that doesn’t seem to go away, it may not be long before leaks are noticeable.
  • Effoflorescence is actually a white film that is somewhat sparkly. It happens whenever salt deposits from standing water forms on walls. If you are able to scrape off this white, powdery-like substance, you should count on having your walls inspected.
  • Crumbling, flaking or peeling walls are caused by water being forced through the surface. Many times, this is attributed to age or decaying paint, and is often overlooked as a result. They are usually an indication of things to come, and should be dealt with accordingly.
  • Cracks in interior or exterior walls can provide a path for water to enter, and in some cases even result from leaks. Although hairline cracks are normal, anything larger should be filled in order to safeguard against leaks.

By inspecting your basement on a regular basis, you can catch these signs early on, thereby making it less likely you will encounter extensive damage. If you need help with basement waterproofing, contact us.
