- Effoflorescence is actually a white film that is somewhat sparkly. It happens whenever salt deposits from standing water forms on walls. If you are able to scrape off this white, powdery-like substance, you should count on having your walls inspected.
- Crumbling, flaking or peeling walls are caused by water being forced through the surface. Many times, this is attributed to age or decaying paint, and is often overlooked as a result. They are usually an indication of things to come, and should be dealt with accordingly.
- Cracks in interior or exterior walls can provide a path for water to enter, and in some cases even result from leaks. Although hairline cracks are normal, anything larger should be filled in order to safeguard against leaks.
